incredible work, paul! much prefer your approach than scaler's. are there any updates planned for it soon, by the way?
Thanks! I have things on my list but its just finding the time to do them. With so many apps these days each is having to wait its turn for the updates which are coming.
Cool app! Can the different set lists be accessed via midi commands?
The Set Lists can be accessed using the AU parameters but not via MIDI CC at the moment.
Would the midi record and copy and paste also work on the iPhone version, and would I be able to paste the midi to SAND sequencer app? Thanks.
I'm not familiar with this app to be honest, and it depends on how it picks up MIDI data in the clipboard. I know it works with Helium but I really can't promise it would work on SAND.
@@PaultheMusicManthank you for your reply. I can copy and paste midi clips from audioshare to sand so it should work too. Does your app do a simple midi export too? For example to save the midi file to the Files app so it can be easily imported into sand as well? Thanks again :)
If you long press the COPY button it will allow you to perform a recording of a sequence of a specified length. It presents a dialog once complete and you can drag the file icon to the Files App which is as good as an export. However, I'm not sure how easy this is on an iPhone.
Ok. Excellent. Thank you.
Love this can you play two drums on same beat though
ah I see needs to be classed as a chord. Clever
@@rgrandles You got it! Checkout my video on Step Recording which allows you to do this really simply.
Sir Pal: FANTASTIC
So glad I bought it!
Hi . will this work live on stage with a full band making all that noise ? just checking , before I decide to buy :-) thanks
It's like any device with a microphone attached, it could struggle with feedback dependant on levels and proximity to speakers.
@@PaultheMusicMan Thanks . I'm looking for an ipad version of the old rack or pedal harmonizers . So if feedback is the only problem , that's just the same as before . I was more concerned about the software being able to pick out the harmonies with the on stage background noise , as opposed to a quiet studio .
Just discovered this app, looks like something I didn’t realise I needed. I’m sure the answer is yes but can you set it to route a layer to a hardware synth? Maybe that’s using the midi routing matrix in AUM to route an output port to that synth?
The idea behind the app is to take MIDI input from a single keyboard and split that into multiple layers that control up to 16 destination synths or AUv3's using the 16 MIDI outs of MIDI Layers. It is most useful inside of AUM and apart from not having MPE it is a very well equiped piece of software that can serve most people well.
I asked a question about where I could ask for support on one of your apps but I received no answer. All I wanted to ask was if the app MIDI strummer could be updated to be more stable, since I find good use out of it but it often crashes ruining the whole workflow of my projects. And if the issue with it loving to reset itself to the default preset, or really some way to remove the default steel string preset from appearing at all as an option being something that should be added. How many times after strummer crashed the plugin would remove any soundfont I was using and just set itself to steel string over and over
Thanks for getting in touch, I wasn't aware of any previous attempts to connect with me. I wasn't aware of any issues with Strummer as it is stable in Logic Pro and AUM where I am using it all of the time. My guess is that you are using a different host app? What model of iPad are you using and which version of iOS? Is this issue happening while in use or while loading the app?
@@PaultheMusicMan well I’m using an Ipad 10th generation on the latest update and iOS. And yeah actually I run the app in Logic pro, but the problem mainly occurs since I find the soundfont capabilities of strummer to be really good, enough for me to use it for basically a majority of my soundfonts with. The problems begin mainly because I do run quite heavy soundfonts of like 300mb+, and some really heavy ones are usually the cause for the strummer breaking (which basically limit a lot of what I can do then since I can only run certain soundfonts very sparingly). Another thing that happens with like 900mb+ soundfonts is that they will often lack a lot of the dynamic layers specifically really high ones or the lower dynamics, making the soundfonts unplayable in those circumstances. It has happened to me with multiple of those heavy type of soundfonts hence why I can share about it with certainty. And this issue only happens with strummer, I have another soundfont player I got to test and that one can play all the sounds from a soundfont even if it is heavy but it comes with its own issues instead. And yeah basically when strummer crashes over and over since it gets in a sort of loop, it forces every other strummer plugin to also reset, and it really becomes frustrating to use and at some point it will have crashed so much that it resets back to steel string with all the reverb, delay, eq, and chorus settings that the steel string preset use. Which I personally wish for there be an option to set a different preset or remove that as a default to avoid dealing with having to also remove all those effect settings when opening a new strummer plugin to run another soundfont and etc.
@@Someone45356 Aha, this use of very large soundfonts may be the problem, since we use Apples own soundfont sampler behind the scenes and an AUv3 is limited to how much memory it can allocate. This is especially true if you use more than one instance of Strummer since the memory allowed for an AUv3 is shared between instances. If the errors are due to Apple's soundfont engine there may be little I can do, but I will investigate the problem and see if there are any crash logs that might point out what is causing the problem. Do you have these issues when NOT using your own soundfonts?
@ well the problem is that it would be hard for me to know since I do indeed basically just use strummer as a soundfont reader for all my various soundfonts so I imagine that the issue would not exist if I were to run the much simpler out-of-the-box presets and soundfonts given. Also yeah that’s interesting to know about the apple sampler thing, and well it definitely makes me think. The other soundfont player to test issues I used was bs-16i and that app is capable of running the really heavy soundfonts with every dynamic layer available, but its drawback is that it will begin to lag under too much pressure and it is reasonable surely. Meanwhile strummer acts differently as it won’t lag under heavy duty soundfonts, but it can and will just randomly crash out of nowhere and like I mentioned it does have the issue of the dynamic layers. I do think both apps use the apple sampler but I can’t be sure, in any case its interesting the contrast and makes me wonder why one acts one way and one acts the other way.
@@Someone45356 Ok, the crash logs show a number of crashes with someone using a 9th gen iPad and iOS18.1.1. The crash is in Apples soundfont engine in a function called SmplerNote::NotifyVoiceFinished(VoiceZone Const&) which is not part of my code. This could simply be that the soundfonts are not fully supported by Apples engine or simply too big. You are on an older iPad which has less physical memory than the newer M series chips and I'm not sure if the additional memory would help.
Two days into this and not one note recorded. Are there templates we can download and reverse engineer?
What are you struggling with? You need to load Helium into something like AUM or alternative DAW as it wasn't intended as a standalone app. You then need to load Helium as a MIDI effect (not an audio). Helium doesn't make any sound itself, it simply records and replays MIDI data so you must route MIDI input from your MIDI keyboard into Heliums MIDI Input in order to record notes. Let me know what you are struggling with and perhaps I can point you in the right direction.
Hi Paul, first, thanks for your videos. A question about HELIUM: is it possible to define where I want to copy a selection, example: a selection of 4 bars at the start of the grid pasted to bar 50 of the timeline? By typing the number 50 somewhere, may be ?
The only way to do this is to zoom out so you can see what you want to copy. Tap, hold and swipe left to right ensuring the selection box encapsulates the items you want to select. Alternatively you can range a selection on the ruler, long press on the Selection button and choose the 'Loop to Selection' option. You can then copy the selection, move the plat cursor to the destination position (by clicking in the ruler at bar 50), then picking paste from the clipboard menu.
@@PaultheMusicMan Ok, thank you for this clear explanation Paul, best regards 🏆
Hi Paul, I am wondering if there is any way to set this up so that I can record the four inputs of my audio interface to separate tracks in one instance simultaneously. I assumed this could be done, but I can’t find a way to configure it like this. Am I missing something? Cheers!
Sorry no, this app was not created as a DAW replacement so isn't fullly featured. You can only record one input at a time sadly.
@PaultheMusicMan thanks for the clarification! It is a bit of a pity, I really like the simplicity of the design and was hoping it could serve as a lightweight Portastudio type of thing. Any chance that this could be implemented some time in the future?
@@literarymachine There is always a possibility when I get the time, but there is another app on the store called MultiTrack DAW (Perfectly Simple Multitracking) which might be worth a look at. I haven't used it in years but it does allow multi-track recording and works great on the iPhone too.
A long time ago, we really liked the Aurora (and later Meteor?) apps for windows mobile and later iOS! (I would still use them if they ran on current iOS?) ruclips.net/video/seg0nI-sFC0/видео.htmlsi=vBY9IgX4ZZMkwTd6
These were indeed great days that paved the way for iOS, and as you pointed out some of my apps made their way over to the new platform. I did kind of re-invent Aurora on iOS in the form of DigiKeys but without the flashing lights. Perhaps one day I may create something more authentic!
Great review! 🎉Regards..
Mr. Paul, wonderful midistep! May I suggest a couple of things? One, the ability to turn on a grey line from the place you put a finger to the keys of the piano to facilitate the setting of notes/chords; two, the ability to record notes from a keyboard. Thanks!
If you take a look at my latest video on MidiStep on Step Recod it shows how to record from an external keyboard.
@ Thank you!
The step sequencer recording is so cool!!!i wish it had the slide option as well in the step recording menu .an auv3 parameter to control the step record button is needed as well.
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by a slide option? It can do slides from one note to another if thats what you mean. I covered this in previous videos.
@@PaultheMusicMan Hi .on the latest update when entering step recording mode via the pause button while the host is stopped the mini menu is not including the slide option .it would be nice if we could have this option as well.hope it makes sense.Thanks.
@@PLASMA22280 Ok, I got you... and yes, this is something I could add in a future version.
@@PaultheMusicMan oh that's great news!Thanks!
Is there a way to EQ a specfic sample in digistix? Seems i can only EQ globally for the whole kit via the "Filter" options.
The sampler in DigiStix records the sample as-is and cannot be EQ'd within the app itself.
Hey Paul, this looks so great and I want to buy it and use it as a standalone multitrack recorder. Will this work as standalone or only as a plug-in?
Sadly, this is not a standalone app and needs to be hosted under something like AUM or Cubasis etc.
@@PaultheMusicMan ah bummer! Thanks for the quick response. Any plans to make it a standalone app?
@@realalexandergiron I can recommend an app called 'MultiTrack DAW' which you can find on the App Store. This is a very minimilistic DAW that I used to use many moons ago, but it works well on both iPad and iPhone and relatively cheap.
Also, good demo at the end there 👍
More goodness added, thanks! If you have further additions in mind, here is my input. - Feature: more options for the Jump buttons chevron. Reverse, Bouncing, Brownian, and F3B2 as seen in the old Quantum step sequencer; forward 3 then backward 2. This and Brownian can create interesting slight variations of long melody lines. And F2B1 maybe. - Fix: currently when opening MidiStep in AUM for the first time in the session, you cannot interact with the Step Repeat buttons in the bottom right corner, they are disabled. If you go to the Repeat tab and temporarily modify the slider (but setting it back to 0 default value), then by now the buttons have become enabled. Is there a bug here? Btw, it is visually very hard to see that those buttons are initially disabled, so you could have some frustrated user attempts going on here (what does this do, why is nothing happening).
Thanks for the suggestions, I will seriously consider some additional options. No, its not a bug, it makes no sense for the Step Repeat settings to be active if a step has a Repeat value of 1. A value of 1 means no repeat of course.
@@PaultheMusicMan Agreed, that makes sense, but currently you get these buttons active even with repeat=1 by doing this: Slide repeat value up and back down to 1 for a step. You see the buttons are again disabled here (correct), but when you switch back to Octave they have now become enabled. I would suggest to grey out all the text inside disabled buttons. Right now these repeat buttons have some white highlight text inside them, making them not look obviously disabled.
@@EN-de1wz Yep, you are completely correct... this is misleading and will be fixed!
Fantastic update! The app that just keeps on giving: (1) Step Recording, (2) Random Group Mode, and a (3) Quick Start Guide. Let's talk about each one: (1) Step Recording - The one I was waiting for! Input notes and chords by step. Input chords from any source - Progressions, Tonality, Scaler 2, Helium, ChordBud, Logic Pro, etc. (2) Random Group Mode - Very cool idea. Definitely lends the app toward use as more of a scene oriented sequencer. (3) Quick Start Guide - Brilliant idea! Just go to Help and tap the "Quick Start Guide" button, and you're off to the races.
Another excellent step recording source is Strummer, which sends guitar voicings. 👍
@@GregoryRiker Oh yeah - excellent. And then you could send the recorded chords out to Strummer or another guitar or string app .. so many great possibilities!
That’s the way I do it - one instance of strummer as a MIDI source into MidiStep, routed to another instance of strummer as an instrument. Another strummer trick is to send block chords from MidiStep to strummer loaded as an instrument, enable chord recognition, then use strummer’s pattern players, which enable even more guitar-centric performance options.
Paul, you are an absolute genius 😊
Awesome app, so much fun! Thanks a lot for this tutorial.
Amazing app! I just struggle to make it work with mpe pitch bends over 48 semitones. It kind of works, just the pitch bends are not correct. Am I missing something?
The app doesn't support MPE as there is more than just pitch bending over 48 semitones. In MPE voices are dynamixally allocated to MIDI channels which sadly is not possible.
Hi Paul. It would be great to have also a midi out for each Lanes. Or I missed that?
You can enable the Multi-Out button (under the power switch) which will cause Evolver to use seperate outputs for each band. In this mode the band effects are not applied as I assume the reason you want additional outputs is to apply your own effects.
I was speaking about midi, not audio 😉
@@j-julien Sorry mate, I missunderstood your original question. It's an interesting idea, and one I will certainly consider for a future update. I can't promise anything but I will add it to my list.
Thanks Paul 🙂
I got an early release of the iPad series 1 in 2010. Those were exciting days.
Can surface builder be used to control midi outboard gear ie:Yamaha Spx 90
Possibly if you know all the MIDI CC numbers you need to change.
Pretty much all the samplers I've looked into over the past 30 years, and the few I've used, are made for sample and playback of conventional instruments. Instead, I'm interested in using my voice and field recordings, then manipulating them. Chameleon looks like it'll work for that.…I've been vaguely exploring iPad for music production for the past eight years but only recently have started to figure it out, with the help of RUclips (The Sound Test Room, for instance, is good at showing the creative potential of apps). I've purchased a few of your apps in the past month. They're fantastic and look very promising. Thank you for posting these videos. They help.
Yes, you could very easily take several field recordings and drop them onto seperate pads and map them to MIDI note ranges. The only issue is I believe there is a limit to how long a single sample can be but I don't recall if its 30s or 60s.
@ That's good to know. The longer samples can be cut up in Neon, I suppose. (On computer I used Sound Forge.) When I first started recording in 1996 I had a Roland MS-1. Something like 28 seconds for all 16 pads (two banks of 8 pads).
@@FormerBiped I was also a massive SoundForge user back in the day. I was more involved in music production back then, and not so much now. Of course the sampples can be looped and with multiple samples over various key ranges you can create texture presets if these are atmosperic sounds. You might also want to checkout WaveCloud as I think this is better suited to field recordings.
Jeez Paul you’re developing this faster than I can watch the Masterclasses! 😂 Great job on the Drum Mapping and Hive Mind. Do you foresee hosting the most common iOS Drum Machine mappings inside MidiStep to save everyone having to create them separately? Thinking OneShot, DrumComputer, Playbeat3, FAC Drumkit, the Ruismakers, Hammerhead?
I would prefer to keep MidiStep purely a MIDI generator if I'm honest.
What is that atmospheric/angelic preset playing from 4:27? Is it one of the presets that comes with the plugin and is ready to use out of the box?
This is a preset called MotherShip which is in the Default bank.
@@PaultheMusicMan roger, thank you.
Thanks for all the great masterclass videos!
Hey Paul, firstly kudos for MidiStep (and all your plugins). I think it may be my fave of the year. Just one question - is there anyway to save the Key per pattern? I'm trying to setup a key change at say pattern 8 but the Key option seems to be global.
Apologies Paul, saw the process in Masterclass 4 after a kind soul on the Loopy Pro Forum pointed me in the right direction.
You are a genius and artist Sir! Question...will this run in standalone, and if yes, with it's own keyboard (sorry, I'm a nube).
Yes, it will run in standalone mode, although it is obviously best used inside a DAW like AUM or Cubasis etc.
Excellent I am looking into this as yet another one of your apps to buy. I have a feature request for your other excellent app which you can update as a suitably priced IAP. So I would like independent control of each of the generated harmonies as follows Melo Vox [excellent for harmonies, etc] independently Voice modeller for each harmony while preserving the original vocal + Formants / [mix of odd - even] Overtones present FROM ORIGINAL vocal Male - Female (... Young - Mature) + Amplitude - Volume + ADSR + Resonance size & shape of [Chest / Throat / Nose / Mouth] + Vocal range behavior lower male register reduce certain harmonics, higher range increase certain harmonics to add clarity, etc Air Flow [airy breath / growl / falsetto / noise = overtones very slight offset <higher or lower>]
Great app. Thumbs up!
Awesome update. Thanks a lot. Wish you great and peaceful holidays!
You are the best! When you activated random notes on chords - why don't they show on the keyboard while playing?
This is an option we discussed, although it doesn't do it at the minute.
I’m using digistix in Loopy Pro. It seems every time I go back to loopy, digistix has forgotten all of the patterns I have created. Is there a way to save the patterns so they don’t erase themselves?
Mr. Paul, you have levelled up the app a lot ! The “Hive mind” concept is very useful: now we can write sections of a song more easily and out of one midi file, because it is possible to tweak instruments with more precision, with randomness added (not possible in a fixed midi), more complexity but under control. Have you created a DAW without noticing it?
Hey Paul hope your feeling well
Insane plugins and DS2 is a beast like the rest of them! How could one man pull off 50+ top shelf plugins? No idea. That said, I’m having issue hearing multi-layers: I import hat1 to pad1 layer1, then hat2 to pad1 layer2. I see both wavs in the window. Settings are all default. Can only hear layer1 hat1. 🤷🏻♂️ Also, I used to be able to import a long wav of drum hits to pad1, slice them to pads (let’s say 32) across A/B, then import on C , pad1, a new long wav of hits, and slice (it would ask where to - I would select C) and it would spread them across C/D. But recently, it doesn’t prompt where to slice second wav and they end up overwriting those on A/B. Thoughts? Thanks!!
Oh, and I could only get layer2 to display a wav if I import (ex. IPhone File app). If I choose Assign from Kit (reference) it doesn’t prompt to choose layer and just overwrites layer1 with the second wav
Same behavior in standalone. Also, on Layer Tuning page the Preview button plays the wav on later2. So it’s just a matter of how to get them playing together 🤔
Perhaps you are thinking of Neon which allows you to split wavs into slices and export them since no slicing option is available in DS2?
@@PaultheMusicMan I’m referring to DigiStix2. I slice all the time and have created lots of kits using the slice feature. I don’t have Neon, yet.
@@RapBeatRepository Can you believe I forgot I added a slice option to DS2. I will investigate when I have caught up with my emails and get back to you on that one. It does make sense that it would overwrite 2 banks but I'm guessing its not prompting for the start bank?
The amount of options is really impressive. Still hoping for a random walk feature, but it's already so great!
Have you tried using the random jump feature in the Step lane?
@@GregoryRiker Yep, but it's usually less melodic than a random walk, where it only jumps to adjacent steps. It's in ZOA for example, and it can do some nice variations. A really fancy random walk would allow for customizing how many steps a jump could be and the probability that it happens. One can wish :)
An alternate approach would be to create a chord with a palette of acceptable notes, set the chord step to RND, and the complexity to 1. This will cause a single note to be randomly selected from the chord at that step. Alternatively, select a tonic note at the step, set the chord step to RND, and complexity to 1. This will generate a random note at that step based on the current key and settings in the Random Note Settings dialog.
@@GregoryRiker Thank you, I will have to try this.

I don’t know how you keep making your apps better, but thank you 👏👏👏👏🙏. Saw Jades show last night, and picked up a few more 4pockets apps to give a little support. All the best over Christmas, hope you have a great time, Paul The Music Magician 🎄🎄🎄.
This is a very useful feature, love it as I can create things despite my adhd. It allows me to organise the mix. The other great thing is you can have an extra groove in the background which you can change on the fly independently of the sections. Makes for a fabulous tool for creation….
Amazing ,Wonderful great app. A real Masterpiece 😎👍
This is a super product, don’t miss out and get it for Christmas…
Have a wonderful XMas my friend. Ironially for anyone looking at this it does go on sale from the 25th Dec!
